That begins with healthy bones

Bones, Bones, Bones,

The importance of our Skeletal Health

Our Skeletal System is vital for survival. It consists of the 206 bones that make up our body as well as our tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Its main functions are shape, support, movement, protection and blood cell production.

During our childhood and adolescence our body its able to produce new bone faster than it breaks down old bone which helps increase your bone mass! However we reach your peak bone mass by the age of 30! Once that happens, our body isn't able to keep up and we tend to loose more bone than our body is able to gain! But don't worry, we can help prevent this! Knowing how to keep strong healthy muscles is the key!

What affects our bone health?

Preventable Factors:
Amount of Calcium in diet: High amounts of calcium in your diet contributes to stronger bones with less risk of fractures

Amount of Physical Activity: Those who are more physically active has a decreased risk bone fractures compared to those who are sedentary.

Drugs and Alcohol: using alcohol and drugs decreases you're bodies ability to absorb calcium

Unpreventable Factors:
Gender: Women have greater

risk for osteoporosis than men
Race: Asian and Caucasians
Family History: If a family member has osteoporosis, you are at a higher risk.

Age: As we get older, our bones get more fragile and weaker.
